Vegan Store recently opened as Tokyo’s first all-vegan convenience store in the Asakusa district. The store offers a variety of vegan grocery items with a Japanese twist, such as bento boxed lunches, onigiri rice balls, dashi soup, soft-serve ice cream, and other Japanese convenience store basics.
The store also offers packaged items such as vegan meats and cheeses, non-dairy milks and yogurts, snacks, and self-care items. The outlet also features a casual sit-down restaurant serving affordable hot meals made from organic vegetables.
The timing of the opening follows initiatives to make Japan more vegan friendly. Last month, Tokyo lawmakers began discussing proposals on food guidelines served in restaurants to meet the growing demand for plant-based options, as part of the country’s aim to host the Summer Olympics in 2020.
