Question: In our daily life, how can we benefit those sentient beings in the lower realms?
Guru’s answer: In the everyday life, we can give some leftovers such as face washing water or dishwashing water to those beings in the lower realms. They need these. There is a public case regarding a hungry ghost holding sputum in his hand. The ghost was asked how and when he got this handful of sputum. He said he got it from a sangha who spitted out phlegm and made a clear aspiration at the same time. If we do everything with compassion, even spitting phlegm can be a giving. Things such as shower water or face washing water can be given out as well. All we need to do is to chant the Heart Mantra of Avalokitesvara a couple of times and make an aspiration with compassion and pure mentality; those sentient beings in the lower realms will obtain these giving outs.
We now often encounter adverse conditions and obstacles which have something to do with these beings in the lower realms as well. If you keep arising positive thoughts and make frequent givings to these beings, they can get benefits and you can also pay the debts that you owed in the past. Actually, there are reasons that these beings are around you. If you don’t owe them anything, they won’t hang around with you. It is because you owe them in previous lives you have to pay them back now. By doing giving outs we can pay the debts as well as fulfil the karma. Besides, when you make giving outs for these beings all the time, you not only benefit them, they will also become your friends and act as your faithful protectors.
