the purpose of this sutra is to promote the mahayana prajna view of emptiness and to promote the ability to practice and become a buddha in secular life. the spirit it represents is a convenient method for the dharma to be liberated and become a buddha in the world and not separated from the worldly nature. the "non-dual dharma" view proposed in it eliminates all contradictions and eliminates all oppositions, which are mainly manifested in the purity of the mind and the buddha's land, the meditation in desire, the dust without being stained, and the mind without being dwelled on.

《although the vimalakirti sutra is profound in meaning, the rhetoric is concise and beautiful, especially the expression techniques of dialogue and drama, such as manjushri's questioning, the scattering of flowers, the invitation of the fragrant earth, etc. the story and characters are vivid, the imagination is strange, and the literary interest is rich. using a simple method to attract the public's beliefs is a major feature of the mahayana classics. hu shi commented on this sutra as a "semi-novel, semi-dramatic work."

literary scholars during the southern and northern dynasties loved qing talks and the vimalakirti sutra. the works of the six dynasties were deeply influenced by the buddhist doctrines and literary techniques in the vimalakirti sutra, and reflected scenes such as evil retribution and hell. when reading the "tao te ching", seng zhao sighed that "beautiful means beautiful, but the way to get rid of the gods and impoverishments is still not perfect." later, he read the "vimalakirti sutra" and decided to become a monk. the biography of the emerging monk also records the deeds of zhi dun in shanyin to preach the vimalakirti sutra. wang anshi wrote a poem "thoughts on reading the vimalakirti sutra": "the body is like foam and the wind, and the knife cuts the fragrance and paints it all in the air. sitting in the world and looking at this principle, vimalakirti has supernatural powers even though he is sick."

《the idea of ​​"non-dual method" in the vimalakirti sutra deeply influenced the idea of ​​"non-dual" in zen. that is, the so-called "movement and stillness are neither two, truth and delusion are not two, vimalakirti is the only way to enter the only way." the vimalakirti sutra has a profound influence on han buddhism and even chinese culture. discourses such as "only the pure land of the mind", "troubles are bodhi", and "mustard seeds are sumeru" are reflected in the main methods of zen, tiantai, and huayan sects. the words "the only way to do the non-dual method", "out of the mud without staining", and "scented and accumulated in the heavenly kitchen" are also derived from the vimalakirti sutra.
