十善含摄在五戒之中，故常有五戒十善并称。修五戒十善，同得人天果报。十善亦为五戒之分化，离五戒并不别有十善。以类别而言，十善分属身、语、意三业。持修十善之行，乃为生于善道之行，谓十善业道，反之为十恶业道。

行十不善业的果报，在《华严经》中说得非常明了。即：十不善道，是地狱、畜生、饿鬼受生因；十善业道，是人天因。十不善道，上者地狱因、中者畜生因、下者饿鬼因。
