California media outlet Long Beach Post is going vegan for the month of January and is asking its readers to join in. The entire Post team has made a New Year’s resolution to give up all animal products for 31 days. The team is also launching a special short-term newsletter to help its readers stay motivated. The newsletter will include tips and tricks from some of its resident already-vegans; website, recipe, and restaurant recommendations; answers to questions about living plant-based; and more.
“Phasing animal products out of your life isn’t necessarily easy, but it doesn’t have to be a drag either. There have never been more great vegan restaurants to try in Long Beach, or more interesting vegan options on the shelves at your local grocery store,” Post writer Dennis Dean said.
“There are a lot of reasons to go vegan, whether it ends up being something you try out for a month or whether you end up making the switch permanently.” Dean suggests that if you go vegan for one month, you’ll save the lives of approximately 30 animals, save 33,000 gallons of water, 900 square feet of forest, and prevent 600 pounds of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
And, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “veganism is linked to a decrease in the likelihood of developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes or high blood pressure. A well-rounded vegan diet provides all the nutrients you need, including protein, fiber, and minerals, without the cholesterol or saturated fat of a meat-heavy diet.”
