When reciting mantras or Buddha’s names with voice out, I will gradually lose my voice. What is this all about?

问:出声念咒、念佛,念着念着就出不来声音了,是怎么回事呢?

Question: When reciting mantras or Buddha’s names with voice out, gradually I will lose my voice. What is this all about?

答:是不是睡着了,念着念着就进入睡眠了,然后就没有声音了?这还是身心没有调整好。我们闻法时有闻法的方式,修法时有修法的方式,闻法、修法的时候都既不要外散、也不要内收,这两个都是过患。你说的这种情况,肯定是内收吧。若不是内收,没有声音就没有声音,不要太在意。

Guru’s answer: Did you fall asleep during the recitation and make no voice in the end? It is because you haven’t adjusted your body and mentality appropriately. There is a certain way when we listen to the Dharma and practice. We should not outward distract nor do we inward tense too much as both of them have their harmful defects. The situation you mentioned is definitely an inward tension. If you didn’t make yourself inward tensed, it is alright to have no voice in the end. We don’t worry this too much.

修行过程中也许会有一些觉受,不要执着,这些觉受都不可靠的。修行是否有进步、有成就,就看自己的烦恼和习气是否减少了。若是烦恼和习气减少了,说明你有一点修行、有一点成就了,这是最好的标准。其它一些觉受,比如今天我看见佛了,有什么特殊的感觉,这都是不可靠的。以前我们也讲过,有三大觉受——乐觉受、明觉受、无分别觉受,那是最重要、最根本的,还有其它各种各样的觉受。这些都不要执着。

You might come across some affinity for experiences during the practice but do not cling onto them. These experiences are not reliable. Whether you make progress or achievement depends on if you have fewer afflictions or habitual patterns. If they are reduced, it indicates that you made progress and achievement. This is the best criteria that we observe. Other experiences, say, I saw Buddha today or I felt something special, are not reliable. We used to talked about three major affinities for experiences which are happiness, luminosity and impartiality. These are the most important and fundamental. Although there are still various affinities for experiences we don’t cling onto them.
